1) You have a machine doing nothing, may as well put it to work. 2) The other machines *might* be doing something while they're running the backup chores, or they might need the disk space. Our backups run on a single machine that is dedicated to the task. (That said, we have well over 500 GB of stuff to back up on a regular basis) If you're backing up to a slower medium, such as tape, you almost *have* to use a dedicated system. 3) Machines running only a few programs are more stable. I have a Performa 6214 running as a web server. Despite tis being a reknowned 'Road Applle', it's up for months at a time.
