It's not useless at all, particularly...where your Mac is crashing as soon as you get to the desktop. Also,...you can invoke a restart by hold the command-option keys while clicking on the close box and force a restart.
For those rare occasions, I hold the shift key on startup to totally disable extensions, then open EM if desired, and use the keyboard or menu bar to restart. EM extension not essential. Besides, you have to remember all those key combinations. ;-)
