With the exception of SCSI Zips, and drives which are powered through the data cable (Mac floppies, and SCA drives), all drives utilize the same AMP Mate-N-Lock 4-pin connector for power. Pin 1 = +12 volts, Pin 2 = +12 volts return, Pin 3 = +5 volts return, and Pin 4 = +5 volts. CDs and DVDs, and especially CD-Rs and DVD-Rs, require a lot more power than does a modern hard disk. 35 watts should be sufficient. An older hard drive will require about 35 watts once the spindle motor has accelerated, but will require about twice that power for the first several seconds.
