I've done this many times. I find that the CD power supplies are usually
higher power than the average external HD power supply, so that hasn't been a
problem.

The PS connects to the HD via a standard 4 pin power cable and the ribbon
cable plugs into the HD.

Setting SCSI ID and termination can be done on the drive or (if the external
SCSI ID cable/termination switch cables are present and match) on the back of
the CD enclosure.

Make sure the HD uses the same ribbon cable, (50, 68, 80 pin etc. ribbon
cable) the HD will fit in the case, (CD cases are normally 1/2 height, 5.25"
cases. Never try to power a full height old HD with these cases as the old
full height drives required a huge power draw. If you can't put the cover on
the case with the drive inside, it is generally not safe to use with that
PS.) the SCSI ID is set to a unique # and termination is set. (Terminated if
only external device or last in a chain from the computer)
