I have no idea how much they might go for in NZ, but I got one for my 8500 at OWC for $29 US. They've since gone up to $69.

If you *never* go to OS X, then you could also use an Adaptec 2940, which can be had on the list all the time for cheap. They are not supported for OS X and don't work reliably under it, so people unload them regularly. Make sure you get a Mac version if you want your drive to be bootable.
That's more like it! No, I don't intend to use OSX.
Well, tastes very. I think it's the most attractive interface yet designed. But, the primary reason I use it is that it's the best OS currently on the market--many, many times better than OS 9. For that, I still use it if it looked like Windows XP.
Function over form is of course the sensible way.
