Can someone clue me in about what hardware/software I'll need to transfer audio from my tape recorder, going through my receiver, and winding up as a vanilla sound file on my HD where I've got about 90 GB to fool with?

Here's what I've got (probably too much software and not enough hardware): 1) a topnotch Sony tape recorder (topnotch in its bygone hayday) that is strictly mono and has only one output jack (labeled "microphone"); 2) a decent Marantz receiver that has two (left and right) input jacks and two output jacks; 3) my trusty Mac (with its "sound input port" on the back); 4) an iMic USB device and 5) a slew of software: Sound Recorder, iTunes, Toast Titanium, and Peak LE... I'll need to clean up the sound before I burn a CD.

Okay, tape recorder to receiver: just need an RCA/Y cable? Plug the dual jacks into the left/right input?

Next, receiver to computer: cable going from the dual left/right output jacks on the receiver to the computer's "sound input port"? Then, what about the iMic? As I understand it, the iMic is supposed to do something to "clean up" audio; or does that only happen when audio leaves the computer for a stereo system or whatever? But, there's no way I can see to use it (it connects to my USB card instead of the "sound input port").

If the connections I've mentioned are correct, then I enter more bits of unknown territory.

First, setting sound volume level. Among my various volume controls (on the tape recorder, the receiver, and the computer) which do I turn off or ignore and which do I use? And, I'll want to monitor the audio over earphones; is there anything special to take into account here to make sure that setting the "listening volume" will not interfere with the right "recording volume"?

Second, which of my pieces of software will import and deposit the best sounding AIFF file on my HD?

Third, once on my HD I've got a no brainer I guess: simply fool with my Peak LE to clean the sound. Correct?

Fourth, is the conversion to MP3 question. I'll not have to bother converting to MP3. The audio file (in AIFF) is going straight to a CD.

And, last, burning a CD should be straightforward. Yes? Anything to watch out for here? My Toast Titanium will do the job. If I've forgotten to ask something, I'll appreciate any answers to those unasked questions as well. Thanks.

Dave
