in the specs for some camera it says things like "built in USB ports only

In general 'Built-in USB ports only' means 'any Mac with a USB port, add-in or built-in'; the support is in the OS not the hardware. Any Mac with USB support extensions will work.(Well, with a working USB card,at least)

IOW they lie, because they don't want to support 3rd party problems.

I have never had a problem with *any* USB device I've used (many, including several cameras) or Firewire device (only one, my Canon Optura Camcorder, which says 'built-in firewire needed') with my third party cards. Very third party, no-name pc shop ones.

A USB card needs to be UHCI compliant, which p[retty much all of them are these days.

Serial camera connections are unbearably slow.

Moreover, get a camera with removeable media, and you never have to plug the *camera* in anyway, pop put the card plug it into a media reader and go.

The card will appear as a disk drive (usually) right on your desktop.

You're looking to over-analyze...buy the camera on it's merits as a camera. Get one with removable media, and get a card reader for that media and a usb card. You're good to go.
