If you want a NEW camera, go to www.bizrate.com which will find you the cheapest deals for any particular camera.
You'll be most surprised how much "discounted" prices vary. I have checked some of the upmarket Sonys and Nikons... and for the SAME camera the price can vary between $600 and $1200.
Don't pay more than you need to!
Beware! Those discounted camera prices you see are for the non USA versions of those "upmarket" cameras.
What they don't tell you, unless you ask, is that they carry no manufacture warranty. You will of course then be offered the option of buying an added warranty for more $. This warranty is usually just a store warranty. Make no mistake about it, should your new camera fail to function properly, it's going on a slow boat back to Japan because no one in the US wants to touch it. Go ahead and call some of the stores listed on biz rate and verify this info for yourself. Heck, call B&H and Adorama in NewYork - the 2 biggest camera stores in the US. Also, the prices for the USA Bodies of the higher end digital cameras are set by the manufacture leaving a very small profit margin. The interchangeable lens on these cameras come in USA and Non USA versions as well, but there's more room to play with the price on the lens.
Of course, If you're reading this and your not in the USA, well then I guess you probably don't care.
When I made that comment about cameras under 3 MP not being worth the asking price, what I meant to say was that dollar for dollar, I don't think the price on the "consumer" cameras under 3MP are very realistic. It seems to me that they tend to over price the cameras under 3 MP when the output quality is really not that good. For a few $ more you can get one above the 3MP limit and output a fairly decent image in the 8x10 and under range. If you just want still pictures to view at screen resolution(send email, etc.), then save yourself a lot of money and just go get one of those little plastic USB digital cameras I see at office max or office depot or staples for about $14. They even come in different colors! A couple of guys at work bought a few and they did just fine for online purposes.
