Hello everyone. I have a bit of a problem that I wonder if the list can help with.

I have a G3 400 upgraded 7300. I would like to have a great deal of hard drive space, somewhere between 15-20 GB, or more.

I currently have the original 2 GB Apple-ROMed Quantum SCSI-2 50 pin drive installed, and an additional IBM SCSI-2 UltraStar 50 pin 9 GB drive in the lower bay.

What is the cheapest route I could go? Keep in mind the 7300 only has 3 PCI slots, and I am currently using one of them, with another very soon to be filled by a USB card, leaving me with one PCI slot left.

Should I:

Get a ATA PCI controller and dump the SCSI drives, or at least one of them?
Dump the 2 GB SCSI and replace it with a 9-10 GB SCSI?
Get a FireWire card and an external FireWire drive?
Get an external SCSI hard drive case and a 9-10 GB SCSI drive?

I have a 7300/G3/300, running 10.2.8, with a combo USB/Firewire card, and an Ultratek 66 on which I've connected my CD-RW. I have two SCSI hard drives connected: one is a 9 GB Seagate (7200 rpm) and the other is a 18 GB drive that spins at 10k rpm. Having the latter made the 7300 seem like a newer machine.
I would upgrade the SCSI drive to a larger, faster one and partition it. I've had good luck at a couple of the eBay stores.
I'm not so sure about using firewire on these machines. The one time I tried using it while downloading a digital vid recording, the computer went into a panic. On a second attempt, it simply froze, the only time I have had "trouble" with OS X. Perhaps this is different with accessing data on a hard drive.
It seems to me that with the ATA PCI controller (Ultratek 66, et. al.) you would not increase the performance of the machine since the bus speed of the PCI slot is only 33 mhz, IIRC. This might limit the "benefits" of a move to IDE drives. SCSI is native and is fast on our machines.

Just one opinion.
