Thanks Jeff that explains a lot. But I wonder. Does the machine have
to be plugged in or at least have a battery installed in order for a
Cuda reset to be effective ?

No. All the resets mentioned set the machine back to factory default. The CUDA button adn the removing battery method, do this by removing the power that allows the machine to store non-factory settings.

What I mean is, I assume current must be
present in order for the machine to recognize the new hardware
configuration.

Recognizing the new hardware is what happens when the power is reapplied. The reset with no power removes all the accumulated settings stored in the machine (except the ones on the hard drive). When the machine powers up, it must newly examine its configuration, and generally finds the newly installed stuff at this point.

However, the early Open Firmware (and some say the later as well) implementations are buggy. And there's that space limit for the NVRAMrc file. You may do a reset to gain access to a new piece of hardware and find an old piece bumped because there just isn't room for all the needed NVRAMrc OF scripts, etc. I suspect that this is why the Atto UL2D is not compatible with the Sonnet G4/800. I'm pretty sure that the Sonnet G4/800 loads a diaper load of stuff into the NVRAMrc, but I'm not certain of that.

As an aside, I tried installing a 32KB SRAM chip in place of the 8K chip which handles the NVRAM, but it didn't make any difference. It worked fine, but there was no additional space available. I'm not sure if Apple didn't implement the additional address line(s) or if the 8KB allocation for NVRAM is built into the machine's address map in the ROM.
