Most cheaper modems in PC's are only for Windows due to the fact that they require the Windows software to work. This is the reason Linux users have such trouble. As I understand it, most so-called "winmodems" are basically modified soundcards, designed to deliver the tones necessary to work as a modem. Windows and the computer processor make the rest happen. Getting a good outboard "hardware" modem is best since it will work with Macs, Windows, or Linux --- these are *actual* modems that do all the work themselves at the hardware level and don't require software to work. They are superior in design and general usage. Look at CompUSA in the modem section and you will see PCI modems for $29 to $49, but the US Robotics outboard modem is $99!!! Why? Because you get what you pay for and the cheap ones will only work with Windows unless someone was nice enough to write a driver for it to be used with a Mac or Linux. As a general rule, outboard hardware modems are always better, even though more expensive. Check ebay under Macintosh, they always have modems up for bidding.
