What to do? I am running 8.6 on this 2.4 IDE drive, in
4 partitions, Mac OS Extended. I would prefer to avoid
spending moeny on a new drive if this one can be
repaired. But I also do not want a risk complete data
loss, or waste time on a dying drive.

You need to reformat the entire drive not just one partition, are you using any other scsi devices disks or external gadgets that can upset the filestructure on your disk ? did you hotswitch any of those while running ? remove all of them and reformat the entired drive and write Zeros and make new partitions all over again. A bad pram battery can also the destroy the filestructure.
Mac OS 8.6 will require norton 4. and DISKWARRIOR would probably do a better job with the filestructure.
How Much is an IDE drive where you live ? I found a 4gb inside a PC in the garbage here a few years back, you should be able to get one for about 10 $ ?
