Hi there,

My 2 cents worth:

I know this sounds unconventional perhaps, but I would suggest that you find a hard
disk immediately, at least the same size as the one you have now. Go to a local
computer store and ask them if they do upgrades. Like as not, they should have a box
full of old, working, IDEhard disks they would be only too happy to give you. I know
I used to have a box of about 10 that went out with the last council cleanup because
they were of no value I thought ...

Can you install any more software on your hard disk at all? Or do you have another
external device you can boot from?

If you can get a copy of FWB Hard Disk Toolkit, it has a very good device copy
function you can use to make a sector by sector image of everything on your existing
disk.

You should be able to plug the second hard disk in where the cd drive is now as a
temporary measure for the copy process.

We have found, although it doesn't always work, that sticking the failing drive in the
freezer in a static bag for say an hour or so can just be enough to keep it running
for a copy like this. So while you are setting up your replacement drive, etc, it can
be "chilling out". However, that "boing" sound can be very ominous, and not even the
freezer treatment can fix it sometimes.

It is sad to say, but in the IBM compatible world, most hard disks under 4Gb (and even
that is rare now) are useless. It is a tribute to the Mac OS and its apps that a
2.4Gb drive or similar can be quite sufficient for an older mac being used for simple
purposes.

Truth is, drives die, and sadly they always seem to die when you least expect it.

Good luck Mate
