What to do? I am running 8.6 on this 2.4 IDE drive, in
4 partitions, Mac OS Extended. I would prefer to avoid
spending moeny on a new drive if this one can be
repaired. But I also do not want a risk complete data
loss, or waste time on a dying drive.

I am on digest so feel free to email me directly.

I suspect you have a hard drive that is dying. The 'click of death' is specific to IOMeag removable drives and has nothing to do with hard drives. Clicking sounds (louder than normal access sounds) are an indication the drive is dying. You have reformatted the various partitions and lost data. This indicates either your OS is corrupted or a hardware problem, most likely the HD. If you check the swap list, someone should have a 4-10 GB IDE drive very cheap.
