I am running 8.6 on a 7200/90 with 80 MG of real RAM and really like it.
One thing I didn't mention was that I recently bought a 7200/120 at a thrift store for $10 which had 8.6 and 48 RAM and I also found it slow and installed 8.1 on it; I also had some occasional freezing with 8.6 too but what really improved the speed was sticking this 512k cache in it. the 7200 only came with 32mb of cache. It was originally meant for a 7300 but I sold that to someone and never put the 512 cache in it. So I tried it. I sometimes wonder if 8.6 would work better now. Maybe I'll try it again to see the difference when I get some time. Also see how 8.5.1 works before I update it to 8.6.
It's hard to not pick up these old Mac computers for 5 and 10 bucks at thrift stores.
