There is a known hardware problem with the 6200 series (among
others). I don't know if this is the problem you're having. Apple has
a tester for it, and the following is from its ReadMe:

"About the 5XXX/6XXX Tester

"This document describes the 5XXX/6XXX Tester application. This
application checks Power Macintosh and Performa 5200, 5300, 6200, and
6300 series computers for hardware problems that may cause the
computer to freeze. The tester only works on Power Macintosh and
Performa 5200, 5300, 6200, and 6300 series computers."

I can e-mail the tester to you if you'd like.

The Read Me also says:

"After the tester has checked your computer, you'll see a message. If
the message indicates that a problem has been found, contact an
Apple-authorized service provider or Apple customer support to have
your computer repaired. The necessary repairs are covered under a
repair extension program."

Thanks for that comprehensive response.
I have the tester, it comes on the OS 8 CD.
It has indicated that my machine has not had the hardware fix done.
No-one yet has suggested that it is a problem that I can fix myself so I
guess I'll have to contact Apple UK and see if they don't laugh at me
for asking about this so late in the day. Or go to a repair shop and
see if they can help!
