I got a 7500/G3 (xlr8) Mac up and running at the local computer center; the only Mac there, amidst many, many PCs. I have a question about it, however.
The previous owner had put in a USB upgrade card. And the only thing he plugged into it was a keyboard and mouse.
Now, in the process of improving the performance of the Mac, I had to do numerous restarts and desktop rebuilds and the like. I found the USB keyboard to be a huge nuisance at this stage: it wouldn't work with extensions off.
IS THERE ANY GOOD REASON to switch from ADB to USB on an older Mac?
As far as the keyboard, no way, IMHO. I even bought a USB-to-ADB adapter so I could use a ADB keyboard with a Digital Audio G4 because I don't like Apple's USB keyboards. However, a USB card is a plus because it keeps Old World Macs more current for printers, scanners, gamepads, etc. Just be sure to use a name brand, 2-port, USB 1.1 card to avoid problems.
What do you do when you have to fix the o.s.? Just never use Extensions Off? Is there a work-around to this problem?
No work-arounds because USB support is not in the firmware and must be loaded from extensions. You just need to have an ADB keyboard (and mouse if booting into a disk repair utility) handy for when there is a problem.
