I got a 7500/G3 (xlr8) Mac up and running at the local computer center; the only Mac there, amidst many, many PCs. I have a question about it, however.
The previous owner had put in a USB upgrade card. And the only thing he plugged into it was a keyboard and mouse.
Bzzzzzt! Wrong answer! The correct answer is USB mouse and ADB keyboard.
Now, in the process of improving the performance of the Mac, I had to do numerous restarts and desktop rebuilds and the like. I found the USB keyboard to be a huge nuisance at this stage: it wouldn't work with extensions off.
Next time, bring along an ADB keyboard and Apple mouse.
IS THERE ANY GOOD REASON to switch from ADB to USB on an older Mac?
Yes, USB multibutton mice and USB Overdrive.
As well as transferring MP3s to USB players. Slow as all get out, but it's something people do. At some point, I'm going to upgrade the Palm software on the IIIx and the Mac and use the other USB port for hotsyncing the Palm IIIx.
I can't think of one. Any partisans of USB out there who like it on these older Macs?
Let me tell you. My Elecom Shirow Masamune multibutton/scrollwheel mouse & USB Overdrive just kick the crap out of the Apple Mac single button mouse.
What do you do when you have to fix the o.s.? Just never use Extensions Off? Is there a work-around to this problem?
I just boot with extensions off and plug an ADB mouse into the ADB port on the keyboard.
Since I had to do force restarts a number of times before I improved system performance, Extensions Off seemed inevitable.... and the USB keyboard and mouse bothersome.
