Hello,------------------------
I've got a 9600/200 that I acquired some time ago, but recently got set up as my desktop machine. It's got 416MB of RAM, a Nexus 128 video card, an UltraTek/66 ATA card, an Orange Micro USB1/Firewire adapter, and a generic firewire adapter. I replaced the 200MHz 604 with an XLR8 CarrierZIF MPe that I got from OWC when they had them on clearance a year back or so. I'm running an Apple G3 300 w/1MB cache in the carrier, with the XLR8-supplied heatsink and some judiciously applied AS3.
This thing runs *hot*! My idle temps report 48' C, with the average 'working' temp of 60' C. It doesn't lock up or anything, but this has me concerned, as I'm wondering if I've got enough cooling headroom to run a faster CPU. I'm running 10.2.8 and 9.2.2 on the machine now, and the G3 is adequate for light-duty stuff but I'd like to replace it with something faster, as funds permit.
My side-cover fan has been jury-rigged to run from one of the drive connectors, but it does work, and the ducting on the door is in place. I'm also missing the CD-ROM bezel, but all other bezels are in place, and there seems to be decent airflow through the case. I've double-checked the heatsink retention clip to make sure the bend is over the CPU-portion of the ZIF.
My son's 7600 has an old [EMAIL PROTECTED] G4/400 upgrade that works great in his 3-slot machine, but resists all attempts to operate in my six-slot. Otherwise, I'd have something else to compare my CPU temps to. I used to have a Beige G3 with the same type of CPU module (300/150/1M), and in that cramped desktop case it rarely got to 45' C, with the same UltraTek card and a Voodoo5 video card.
Is there anything else I'm missing? Am I worrying over nothing? If this is something to be concerned about, what can I do to reduce the CPU temps in my 9600?
I have six 9600's, all upgraded, running XLR8 G3's or G4's, and three hard drives on the floor. I have a standard cooling regime. I put a fan in the next to bottom PCI bay, turned over so it draws air directly off the Atlas 10k hard drive in the rear floor bay; I mount a large 110 V. fan on the outside of the case directly over the existing power supply fan to increase the airflow out the top; and I put in a side door fan that has more power and moves more air than the stock fan.
In addition, I have invented a fan to recirculate air inside the case and down onto the hard drive on the floor in the front position. I did this because of a couple of hard drive failures in this location from heat buildup.
If you are interested in any of these cooling upgrade options, I will post the fan names, sizes, and sources.
