Those temperatures are high for a g3. It sounds like you need better cooling for the processor.
I have a 9600/350 with g4/450 xlr8 ZIF Carrier, Voodoo5 5500 and Radeon 7000, ATA66 card with Maxtor 30GB 7200 rpm HDD on the bottom platter, Soundblaster, 10/100 NIC, and USB card.
The ZIF Carrier originally came with a crappy heatsink fan that died within 2 months. While this fan was working the processor ran 50-52C idle. I ended up buying a 10mm tall Tennmax Lasagna Thin heatsink fan for it since there isn't much room between the carrier and chassis to work with. The Lasagna fan does a great job but it makes enough noise. I also applied Arctic Silver 3 thermal compound. Since the Lasagna isn't made for ZIF carriers I had to remove the attached clips and drill holes at each corner and use the wire clips that held the old fan to the carrier.
According to the xlr8 control panel, GaugePro, and Tattletech the CPU temperature now runs 38-40C idle and 48-50C worked. (assuming this ZIF gives accurate temperature readings, which it probably doesn't.)

They did seem high to me as well. Glad to know that I'm not going crazy (though it is bad news) :)
I'll look into the Tennmax fans. I suspect I'll be getting one, as soon as I can afford to do so. I've also thought of pulling my 604's stock heatsink, and modifying it to fit the ZIF, but that'll probably be a project for another day :D
Thanks for the information, I appreciate it
