What does this mean: "They are both connected to the same switch which is connected to my router" ...

You can only have one machine connected to a router per cable, as far as I know ...

I've had success connecting two 8500s via my router (each with a separate ethernet cable ... and added an old Compaq running Windows 98), and connecting the Macs via cross-over cabling (not the same as an ethernet cable, even though they look the same from a distance) ... but both Macs are on OS X: 10.2.8 ...

Is it really a cross-over cable?

I set Apple Talk to active on both of them, but the G4 doesn't seem to
be able to see the 8600. I even restarted the 8600 in OS 9, but they still
don't seem to be able to see each other. Even when I connected them
together with a cross over cable, it still didn't work. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
