with its heatsink, the hot air would blow onto this cooling device?. . .

The lid or case cover has a moulding in front of the HDs that looks as if one
can cut it out, maybe that would help airflow - maybe a fan mounted on the
outside here sucking (I don't care what it looks like)?. . . >>

See: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/guest_rev1/
For mounting a fan in front of the HD. Scroll down to the last paragraph
"Optional Fan Mounting."

Also see http://www.geocities.com/glenstrek/7500_fan.html
for detailed directions of mounting a fan on the metal grill behind the
drive. If you check the comments link there is an explanation of how the air flow
in these machines work. (I have photos this type of installation I can send you
off list)

If your drive is 1/2 height (approx. 1 5/8 inch thick) cooling could be an
issue in the 7300's bottom bay. I have read posts describing overheating
disasters and other posts from listers who had no problems at all.

If in doubt you can buy an analogue indoor/outdoor thermometer and tape the
outdoor sensor the drive and monitor its temp. That's what I do.

My 7500 has an 18 GB 1/3 height 7200 Western Digital in the lower bay. It can
reach 115 F when room temp gets up into 85-90 F range. And I'm using a grill
mounted fan. --glen

PS. In answer to your external drive query, the difference in speed between
Bus 0 and Bus 1 is a theoretical 5MB/sec so you will probably not notice a big
difference in performance.
