I too fought with Netscape 4.73 / 4.79 for two years. Struggled to improve Java capability with no joy.
Opera seemed too different so I downloaded Netscape 6.2 .
Ninety five percent of the Java problems went away and the ones that are left rarely crash or freeze the system.
I cannot give an opinion of Mozilla as I have never even seen it. Just relating my experience with an improved Netscape.

Mozilla is great, I've been using it as my main browser since version 0.8. (I'm using 1.6 on OS X right now. 1.21 is the last official OS 9 supported versions, and there is a build of 1.3 out there for OS 9 <http://wamcom.org/latest-131/> It runs, albeit horribly slowly on my PB 5300 with 48 MB ram)
Netscape is a re-badged Mozilla with some extra doodads and much extra built-in advertising.
Netscape 6 was immature (based on Mozilla 0.8) 6.2 is, iirc, based on Mozilla 1.0, and Netscape 7.2 is based on Mozilla 1.4.
Mozilla comes out faster with new upgrades. (they've been averaging about a point release every four months or so.) Save for a few sites that actively weed anything but IE (usually IE on Windows only) I've not had any problem with Mozilla with my bank or credit card companies.
