There's also something called the MDR (Mail Daemon Replacement) which adds additional attributes, including 'thread'. How thread workt is pretty simple, it strips 're'/'fwd' etc from the subject line. Think of the Query and attribute combination as a database built into the Filesystem, because it's basically that kind of thing. We don't need an app to manage our mail, the raw folder/query does it all. We simply have an app called 'mail' that opens when you double click on a mail message. Nothing to do with headers. The email attributes are indipendent indexable values attached to the email message file.
