The query is "live". If more email arrives that fits the criteria, it
immediately appears in the list.

There's also something called the MDR (Mail Daemon Replacement) which adds
additional attributes, including 'thread'. How thread workt is pretty
simple, it strips 're'/'fwd' etc  from the subject line.

Think of the Query and attribute combination as a database built into the
Filesystem, because it's basically that kind of thing. We don't need an app
to manage our mail, the raw folder/query does it all. We simply have an app
called 'mail' that opens when you double click on a mail message. Very
liberating.

Nothing to do with headers. The email attributes are indipendent indexable
values attached to the email message file.

If you've never seen/used BeOS it's not something that's easy to appreciate
without demonstrating.
