What people are talking about here is filtering mailing list messages into separate mailboxes for each list, based on the mailing list address rather than the subject line rather than attempting to filter out the spam. 99% of my e-mail is filtered into various mailboxes. That includes personal and work messages. What is left is a little bit of spam (my ISP catches most of it) and the odd personal response to mailing list or newsgroup postings.

The thread was started by a lister who suggested the prefix idea as a way that all of us could instantly and easily see list messages distinctly.
And many on the list do not use filtering for whatever reason.

Yes, people can learn to use filters instead of expecting the list and everyone else to change so as to accommodate them.

"I can't be bothered to do it so everybody should be forced to do things my way." It's either laziness, incompetence or arrogance. Take your pick.

You left out the people who won't change to an e-mail client that can do more than sort by Subject and who want things mucked up to accomodate them.

Choice of email client like choice of computer platform,browser and operating system is highly personal. And this discussion is in the interest
of making the prefix idea work for all of us. No one is trying to force anything here.

Clark then commented on my thoughts;

But they do want filter, they just want the list to do it for them at whatever cost to others.

And do not deserve your insults.

Which insults? People in this discussion have said they can't be bothered, they don't know how or they just won't. That is called laziness, incompetence and arrogance. Is calling someone what they are an insult?

It has already been established that some listers do filter mail and still find the prefix valuable.

As to the insults, honestly Clark are those the only motivations a bright man such as yourself can ascribe to fellow listers who like the prefix idea ?
You are probably not a race car driver for example, but should we say your driving is below average because you don't want to corner in a controlled drift ? Not everyone on the list is a computer using professional with job driven monetary motivation to thoroughly learn all aspects of the platform.

And speaking of platform Apple Macintosh is why we are all here . Remember, the friendly little computer guy with the smile ?
We ran from the darkside to come to the light of that friendly little computer guy's smile didn't we ? Easy to use, intuitive, non threatening.
User friendly they called it.

How about being Lister Friendly Clark. We could all use some understanding and tolerance here.
