They do have other options that are a lot less expensive - for example, I
could have gotten back 2 GB of stuff for a few hundred.  In my case, that
wasn't enough.

The nice thing about Total Recall, is they have a level 5 clean room, and
can take the platters out and get the data off the platters directly if
there is no other way.  I can't imagine how expensive that would be, but at
least its possible.

what about physically shakin it a bit to see if the readers will fall back in place ? of course this is another risky business, but
doing so has sometimes brought (less important drives) back to life long enough to do the rescue, or give it a smack with your knuckles.
