Actually, the way digital audio recording is done today, toting hard drives back and forth from one studio to another (and from one session to the next) is something that is done constantly. It's the norm, unfortunately. Here's how this happens: In recording studios, digital hard disk audio recording has replaced digital audio tape as the predominant recording format. There is constant swapping of hard drives in and out of various machines during a recording project, in much the same way that you'd have switched reels of analog tape in "the old days". For easy swapping, HDs are mounted in thin hard drive carriers that are essentially a mounting sled with a little carrying handle on the front and a data/power connector on the back. It's all modular. When you're done using a given drive during a recording session, you simply slide the HD out of it's drive bay. Then you just slide the next drive in to replace it, and you continue recording. > That's what networks and media like JAZ and CD-R and DVD-R are for. > > - Dan. I wish it were that easy! You might be surprised to know that the multitrack audio masters for a typical music CD utilize about 30 GB of storage space (!!!). To take your work with you at the end of a recording session, you'd have to burn 6 DVD-Rs! So instead, you take your HDs home with you... With all the handling of HDs that happens on a daily basis in recording studios, it's inevitable that sooner or later, a hard drive will accidentally get dropped. :-) All the best, Greg -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
