Professional data recovery would seem to be my only route, right?

Professional recovery may or may not be the only option depending on what is actually wrong. There are quite a few programs out there that can scan the bare data on the drive and recreate the files.

DO NOT RUN THAT DRIVE!!!! All he'll do is increase the chances that the media will be damaged.

He needs a pro, I recommend Drive Savers <http://www.drivesavers.com>. Expensive, but if anyone can do it, they can.

Yea, what he said. :) Don't run that drive. Don't shake that drive. Don't breath on that drive. If the ground shock caused any damage to the platters or heads, further shock or trying to spin them will spread shrapnel around -- destroying more and more data.

Of course, that brings us to the next q... Why were you transporting an IDE drive like that? Drives are NOT ment to be totted around. That's what networks and media like JAZ and CD-R and DVD-R are for.
