I have just found out that it only does it when the ethernet connection is
active. Unplug the ethernet cable _OR_ switch to an alternative active 56k
dial-up connection and the hard drive activity stops. I did, in fact, update
the firmware in the Netgear router/modem very recently but did not modify
any of the settings. Any further ideas?
