I have actually had better luck with IE 5.1.7 than with NS 6.2.3, on my PowerMac 7300/500.

There are some weird things with IE though. Several websites that my boys
like to visit always crash in IE 5.1.7, but work just fine in NS 6.2.3. And
I've run across a few websites that don't like NS, but work fine in IE,
which is just one reason why I'm still using both NS and IE.

NS 6.2.3 is slower than NS 4.79 on my PM 7300.

When you say better " luck " do you mean fewer crashes ? Since websites seem overwhelmingly biased toward IE I don't doubt that.

It seems to me that the broader the appeal of a site the more it will lean toward IE compatibility. It would be interesting to know how pro web designers decide which compatibilitys to apply and to what degree to apply them. I expect that they rely on niche demographics appealing to their client's market.

Slower even after your processor upgrade ? Well without looking at the numbers I think 6.0.2 is bigger and bigger is always slower unless configured otherwise. Coders add features they think we want. And adding options to turn these off would add even more code bloat.
Such is the way of it. Forever and ever ( Amen ). It gives the industry hope that we will need faster hardware. Alternating with bigger software. It keeps us buying .
