sigh. I just retired my '76 Ford Econoline Van a few months ago. I loved that steel monster, even if it did have license plates welded to the floor (my foot went thru once)... Been using my housemate's little purple Aspire. It just ain't the same! There's no terror in the eyes of the mergers, as I whip around the traffic circles. I miss my van. :(

Actually, as I have appeared to be so publicly happy with OE (my real
feelings about the way MS stuff works on Macs is more mixed and darker but
OE has been excellent...), I might investigate a Mozilla that does not have
the mail component, I know there is one, Firefox or fly or something, but I
want it should be as opened sourced as this 1.3 I just got, I like the
concept and the feedback arrangements.

Mozilla's incarnations are Phoenix, Firebird, and now Firefox. They're OS X only. The WaMCom hack is the last for Classic.

As to its mail and usenet components: pfffft. Just ignore 'em. Use dedicated apps that do it well, not just incidentally.
