Have you tried resetting the pram (hold down keys for 3 cycles) on start-up ? If the battery is dead the all-in-one Macs can act funny. If you can borrow a PCI video card from another Mac you can test it by putting a PCI video card in the 5400 and attaching an external monitor to the card.
