puzzled as to how the drive would mount to line up with the bezel. If I use
a typical 3.5 drive mounting sled, the zip ends up too low...by half an inch

have stock? Or how can I fabricate something to make the drive line up?

The drives mounted on a U shaped metal bracket to raise them up the 1/2" to line up. Post a want to buy on the swap list and you should be able to get one for pretty cheap.

All ideas welcome... Was the stock zip in these ide or scsi? There seem to
be both cables available for use...

If it has a rev 1 rom, it does not support slave ide drives, so you have to use a scsi zip. If it has a rev 2 or 3 rom, it supports slaves so you can use either the scsi or ide zip drive.
