 I don't know if this will be an issue for you but I would guess that
 it might be with Powerbook 540c. I know some wireless routers won't
 pass AppleTalk from the wired to wireless sides but I have no idea if

AFAIK the wired LAN ports on ALL low cost routers are connected to a switch so they are independent of protocol. It's the connection to the wireless port that may or may not work with AppleTalk.
