OK, both of these sound like consistent advice: "Solve it thusly: Put in a bootable CD. Make it's Drive Setup find the drives on the bus. If you see the hard drive but can't access it, think power cable or stiction. If you don't see the drive, power down, pull the drive and reverse the cable. Do part one again.

Jeff ------------------------------ Jacob <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> "It shouldn't matter which side the red stripe is, as long as its connected in the same way on the hard drive and the motherboard. I usually just look at where the little tag/key/knobby bit is (or should be) sticking up and judge how to plug it in. If it doesn't work, then reverse one of the connectors and try again." //////// ok, got the idea now. the main thing that both of these prompt me to ask is, do i then proceed with the assurance that it can't do the motherboard or the drive any harm if i have the cable turned the wrong way around at either end? [ ]yes [ ]no i won't fry something? [ ]yes [ ]no and the other aspect, here, is that thanks to the foxconn design of the sliding drawer motherboard on the back, and the way the front devices [ cd rom, floppie drive and hard drive] connect to the interface, I can't see how or where the other end of this cable goes to, and how it makes contact. not without tearing the entire computer apart, down to taking apart the metal housing, panel by panel! so that region, hidden deep in the center of the computer, is going to have to remain off limits to me at this point. [this ain't no party! this ain't no disco! this ain't no foolin around. this ain't no peecee. this ain't no P3. i ain't got time for that now!]] so... it sounds like the best i can do, is try the cd boot suggestion, and watch to see if the hard drive shows up, or what. if it doesn't, I'll have to wangle around half blindly, trying to turn that cable over, in a tight, narrow space, where i can't see past the first inch or two, beyond the plug bar. i hope i dont tear the covering on the cable against that sharp metal edge. if you guys assure me i can't harm the hard drive by plugging the bar in wrong way round, [ ]yes [ ]no then am i safe in beleiving that when i get done wrestling with this chapter, i can apply the same test to the larger drive i mean to put in, [ ]yes [ ]no after I've found out if i can even see what's on this drive, and pull stuff off of it, if i want to save data, to put on the newer one? )(*&^%$#@ foxconn design....sometimes these engineers are just too clever by half...but I WILL beat them. this I vow. janet in venice -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
