Actually, this matter is so simple and straightforward, I'm surprised it
made it onto the list at all: you tripped the PL 4/600's Desperation
Circuit.

The Desperation Circuit is a widely-employed, but little-known device used
in consumer electronics in general and computers in particular. It's a
simple circuit built into equipment that measures how much you want/need a
particular task done (or not done) and causes the device to malfunction.
The extent of the malfunction is usually in direct proportion to the
perceived importance of the task at hand.

For example, I'm last-minute sniping an eBay auction for a prize collection
of one-of-a-kind hand-painted hairnets. I am quite unspeakably anxious to
win this auction and I wait 'til the last few seconds to place my bid. My
PM9600's Desperation Circuit detects this intense desire to win and,
accordingly, causes the machine to bomb when I hit the "submit bid" button.

In your case, your Laserwriter detected that you did not, in fact, want
fifty pages of unwanted files to print and behaved in the appropriate
manner.

The only advice I can offer is for you to try to control your facial
expressions and breathing when near the Laserwriter. The Desperation
Circuit is tripped by anxiety and expectations which manifest themselves
physiologically in, say, frowns/puzzled expressions or labored
breathing/crying. A good Yoga or Transcendental Meditation class can help
you to control your body and mind so that the Desperation Circuit is not
activated.

HTH,

James Fraser
