Look in System Profiler. How much VRAM do you have ? You probably need to add VRAM or else get a display card ( Twin Turbo is a very affordable choice from the swap list ) and drivers to run higher resolutions. An old Techworks 3D VooDoo or a Radeon would also be good
The 7600, like my 7500 can display up to 1152x870 with the stock 2Mb VRAM. And that's at 16 bpp. No, that's not the problem.
Odds are it's the monitor, either not able to display higher resolutions or it's mis-configured.

Yes a lot depend on the monitor's ability to use various frequencies. I Guess I made an assumption that his monitor was better than mine.
I have to use a 3D VooDoo card to get the 1152 X 570 at a lower frequency to use it on my KDS Walmart special.
Frequency does limit selectable resolutions but I don't know of any monitor that is multisync that can't do at least 640x480 and 800x600 (or 824x632). In other words you ought to have SOME choice.
