So am I to understand that I just can't install an internal ide cd/dvd player in the computer and get it to work?

iDVD is a DVD authoring app. What you are probably looking for is Apple's DVD player. I'm making an assumption that you have a DVD-rom hardware installed since you make no mention but you say the disc mounts on the desktop ? My own experience with getting my 9500 running os 9.2 to play dvds required that tinker. If you have some time on your hands... see this.
