AVP actually has some compression features which I usually use, see the
preferences etc

Well, I think so, yes. (Pro costs nearly double here in Australia. I tried
to get it from the main apple site but it would not accept O/S details. I
was happy to pay in US $ from a Paypal account. All they do is send some
numbers in an email - a key to unlock the potential in QT, I will have to
get it from an authorised Australian outlet (they will email me the numbers
for nearly double the price!). Doubtless, there are probably commercial
justifications. Any legal method I am missing?).

As for compression, apart from QT or the built in AVP itself, I use (don't
ask about the crashes that ensue) some software that came with my (not very
good) Connectix web cam ... QuickMovie. I open the saved AVP file in the
QuickMovie and do some editing and compression. For web, I sometimes get
surprisingly adequate results (low frame rate, low number of colours). Sort
of cute really, like movies at the birth of movies...
