And keep in mind that new IDE & SATA drives can be had for 50 to 80 cents per GB. So, depending on your needs, it might make sense to get a pci interface card and just walk away from SCSI...

OK, but what about USB 2.0?? I have an 8600 .. and not to pile more into the case.. but what about getting USB 2.0 working with an IDE drive external??
Anyone have that working ok?
