"something had to be disconnected from the onboard video I believe to make room for the ATI card"
In my 8500s. I believe I had to remove the L2 cache when installing a CPU that had its own cache ... like my Sonnet G3/500 and G4/450's ...
I also removed VRAM but that was so I could move it from one 8500 which had an ATI card to another, which needed to have no video card other than the on-board type ... and I wanted to max it out without buying more ...
sometimes, fun having two 8500s ...

Is it possible to connect two monitors, one to the Macintosh video port, the other to the video card?
You can't always use both ports, depending upon your set up. I don't remember
seeing what yours is, but on mine(7500/100 w/8500MOBO upgraded w/Sonnet G3
400 & ATI Radeon 7000), something had to be disconnected from the onboard video
I believe to make room for the ATI card, (Previous owner did the upgrade) so
the onboard video port is unusable. However the ATI card has 2 ports.
If the VRAM DIMMs are removed from the logic board then the video port on the
logic board won't work. However, there is no need to remove the VRAM chips to
install a video card. I believe this applies to all the 7xxx/8xxx PCI Macs.
