All right, this feels like a really stupid question, but how can I change the sound output under OS 8.1 from "Built-in" to line out? For some reason, there's no choice of output.
Built-in means the sound output hardware built into the motherboard. The only alternative would be a sound output PCI card.
If you want to switch from built-in speaker to the headphone hack or such just plug something in. If you are talking about the line out of say a 7500 / 7500 series then IIRC the line out is at a fixed level, unaffected by volume control. So just turn the volume off / mute it.
