No, it's the mini-jack.  Headphones and a set of unpowered speakers do 
work, but are awfully (but understandably) quiet.  The mono speaker, 
though, does not work.  A mono mini-plug should work when plugged in, 
because given the design of the plug, it should output the right stereo 
channel.  Is the Mac socket different?

Nevertheless, if I get bored sometime, I'll whip out my soldering iron, 
hack off the mono plug and stick on a stereo one with the channels mixed 
together.
