I'd be very hesitant to physically disable the 9600 cache in a way I couldn't
easily reverse. The reason:

I got a 9600 (pre-Mach V) with a MaxPowr G3/500/1M card that was working fine.
I tried using the card in my PTP that had been working with a Sonnet G3/450/1M
card until I accidentally fried the latter. (Explanation below!) I couldn't get
it to work - it kept freezing, usually just after "Starting Up" appeared,
whether with or without any or all extensions disabled. Since it would still
work with the original 604e/250 card, it wasn't a motherboard problem.

Finally, I got it to work by putting the L2 cache back in!

My guess as to why the PTP worked with the Sonnet card without the cache DIMM,
but the MaxPowr card required it, has to do with the 50 MHz bus speed that the
latter operates at, while the Sonnet ran the bus at 45 MHz!

I managed to fry two Sonnet CPU cards in my PTP by the simple "expedient" (:-<)
of forgetting to reconnect the internal fan after working inside the case!
Fortunately, the first time it was still under warranty and the second time I
had the MaxPowr card available. The latter card, BTW, has a much larger heat
sink, so it might not burn up so easily. I'm not going to experiment, though!

Anyway, my preference is for the PTP over the 9600 because of it has more space
internally for drives and it's much narrower. But if I ever need more RAM slots
in one of these old machines, I'd switch to the 9600.
