In general, the closer you are to a major service provider, the better your
service. Traceroute and ping show travels times and routing from point A to
point B. Let me provide some examples. I have Earthlink as my ISP
(Pasadena, CA) and Superb.net (Vancouver, BC Canada) as my hosting provider.
If I run tracert from Windows I travel from Pasadena, CA to somewhere. If I
run traceroute (UNIX) from my domain I travel from Vancouver to somewhere.

hops. Imagicomm.net is located 3 steps down from a major ISP (Alter.Net) The
travel times show a nice speed except for a BIG delay at hop 13 (1090
milliseconds).

From my domain, expita.com (Vancouver, Canada) I also get to the mailing
list in 16 hops. Notice that from hop 9 onward the path is roughly the same.
No delay this time.
Notice also another item of interest. Earthlink takes until hop 5 to get on
a major "highway" (Alter.Net) before beginning a transcontinental run
whereas my domain (hosted at superb.net -- part of hopone.net) jumps on a
trans-Canada run at hop 3 via Global Crossing (gblx.net).

Hmm, I see that Superb.net is listed as 6th. I've had one unforeseen outage
since I first hosted my site here -- drive failure on UNIX Solaris (my
server) which was back in service (with backups) in 31 minutes.

Well, if you want UNIX with all the bells and whistles or Windows NT then
you might want to look at Superb.Net for your needs. They have plenty of
plans available. http://www.superb.net/
In case you are wondering how I have Earthlink in Pasadena, CA and my domain
in Vancouver, Canada, the answer is telnet. I have DSL service provided by
Earthlink, so everything I do locally from my PC originates in Pasadena,
CA. However, I telnet to my domain (expita.com which is located in
Vancouver, Canada) so everything I do there originates locally from that
server. Hence, the different traces starting at Earthlink or Hopone.
The other nice thing about DSL and this setup, is that I have two (well 3
really) PCs hooked up all the time. I use both the Windows and telnet PCs
simultaneously (my furniture is L-shaped so I have two PCs at 90 degrees to
each other). No problem doing two things at once, only problem is "cutting
and pasting" into one e-mail message (I transfer between PCs via file sharing)
