First, (from your described symptoms), Its unlikely, but the problem
could be a faulty surge suppressor. However, this does sound like a
power supply problem. So, try using the CMOS default settings. Follow
the instructions in your manual, page 13. Check other power related
jumpers on the Mobo. DDR Ram voltage settings are jumpered differently
from PC133 SDRAM and others. Beware of electro-static discharge. Have a
technician do the work if you are remotely uncomfortable.
To answer your questions,
1. The Mobo does not appear to be proprietary regarding ATX power
supplies. On your system, the Athlon processor is more important in
determining the brand and model of power supply required. Check for
compatibility at AMD's Athlon� Processor System Configuration

The link to power supplies is there. With the Zip drive, you should have
at least a 250W supply. 300 watts is good.
2. The likelihood is: Electricity does whatever it pleases. The
described scenario is possible.
3. Sometimes, they can determine the reason for failure.

Had two systems running when the new system shut down. Power off. Will
not power up. No lights, nothing. No sparks. No smoke. No suspicious
noise. Other system kept running. New system is on a surge protector (a
real one). Old system is not attached to a surge system.
Tried three different power cords, and 4 different power outlets
including the one the old system is running on.
Have had system in shop several times (5).
Changed from a K7VMA Mobo to a K7AMA due to zip drive compatibility as
slave.
(actually I don't know what mobo was in the system at delivery - the
invoice said K7VZA the book and software said K7VMA)
Picked up from shop 23rd.
Power problem at approx. 7 PM 24th.
No storms in area at the time of failure.
Questions: Is this Mobo proprietary to a certain power supply.
This sounds like a power supply problem to me. Is this assumption
correct?
What is the likelihood that a power surge hit a system on a surge
protector and not hit a system without a protector that is on the same
circuit? (the shop said it sounds like this is what happened) I am not a
computer nor electrical specialist so I thought I would show then
responses from some specialists. Can they actually determine why the
power supply failed? (If in fact this is the problem.)
