yes Jeff...that's becuz Excel sees 10-01-2001 as a date but doesn't accept the hyphens as a proper format so it changes them to slashes
If you go to the Format menu and select "Style"....in there you will see Excel defaults to "General" for the cell formatting.....if you want to change this, click on the Modify button and choose "Text" from the list now go back into that sheet and type 10-01-2001 and you will see it stays exactly like you typed it Linda Linda's Computer Stop http://www.personal-computer-tutor.com/ Editor, ABC ~ All 'Bout Computers http://www.personal-computer-tutor.com/ABC.htm Online Instructor, Eclectic Academy http://www.eclecticacademy.com/index.htm -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Jeff Dougherty Sent: Sunday, November 04, 2001 9:25 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: PCWorks: More trouble with Excell formatting ?......if you open a blank Excel > sheet and manually type in one of these numbers, does Excel try to turn it > into a date? YES it does... I type 10-01-2001, Excel makes it 10/01/01 I type 10-2001, Excel makes it Oct-01 after I press enter. This is Excel 2000 > cells....then go to the Edit Menu and choose Clear>Formats > Another odd one..This only works for the text that is already there. Then when I click clear-formats to change the date back, it does not go back to the original text. 9-2001 changed to Sep-01, click clear formats, instead of changing to 9-2001, it changes to 37135. The next cell will become a date again. Format cells will only take care of this. But when I open a file created in MSworks database in Excel, it will change all those fields without asking me. And I can not get the original data back which is why I need it to default to 'general' or 'text'. Jeff ============= PCWorks Mailing List ================= Don't see your post?
