(potentially as high as 50Mbps if used by the companies at max efficiency) One widely discussed problem cable Internet access has is its shared-network architecture. Because the head end provides a fixed amount of bandwidth for an entire neighborhood, the overall speed of the connection suffers as more users make greater demands on that fixed bandwidth amount. For example, if a head end offers 25Mbps of bandwidth, and 50 users in the same neighborhood are maximizing that bandwidth, each user would be limited to 0.5Mbps. Of course, the chance that all 50 users are on at the same itime is rare, but it is going to slow you down. DSL has basic download speeds starting around 400 Kbps (kilobits per second) to maybe 1500 Kbps (for a high fee). Upload speeds are usually much higher. Look at the download speed, since that is what applies to your browser use. Upload is for things like uploading web pages to servers, etc.
