Mike......have you checked the temperature?  is it overheating?  when it
freezes, does the numlock on the keyboard work?  if the numlock doesn't
work, then it is usually hardware related...if the numlock does work, then
it's usually software or operating system related

I just spent 8 months troubleshooting my own freeze ups here.....I did
EVERYTHING.....I finally found the problem.....it was my MOUSE.....yep, put
a new mouse on it and haven't locked up in three weeks.....moral of the
story?  check EVERYTHING

Got a real stumper folks.
My wife's computer.....PIII 667, 256 mb ram, gigabyte mother board,
Win98SE.... has just started freezing intermittently. When it locks up it
will usually continue to lock on the boot unless you power it off for a few
hours.
