I found out the hard way myself - Win98 can ONLY handle a maximum of 512 Megs. I tried installing more and got some VERY weird issues/problems happen on my system. Once I went back to only 512 Megs, all the problems disappeared.
Seems each version of Windows has increased the amount of ram that the
system can use and handle, but with regard to 98, it seems to be a limit of
512 Megs.

What is the maximum RAM that can be added to a computer -
Windows 98 - 233mhz - 3.5 hard drive. We have 96 RAM right now and
